Rare Tang Dyn. Sancai Swan Wine Cup, ca.AD618-906 |
Origin: China
Period: ca.AD618-906
Price: "P.O.R."

Description: A rare and beautiful Tang dynasty sancai swan wine cup, ca.AD618-906. Dimensions are 6.25" long by 3.75" tall. Sancai glaze was developed during the Tang dynasty and is a fusion of 3 glaze colors: green, beige and white. The fired glaze has mottled and runny appearance. This sancai wine cup appears to be designed as swan with its head and neck curled back and biting its tail. The tail was formed as the mouth of the wine cup. The body of the wine cup was carved with an intricate high relief pair of wings. There is also a floral design, in high relief, along the lower portion, below the wings of the swan, symbolic of being nestled in a patch of flowers. The base is without foot rim and is flat and not glazed. Note that what appears to be a white spot on the base is actually more of a gray-beige color. My photo labs lighting caused this to appear much more white and brighter than its actual color. The overall condition consensus is very fine condition.
Condition: Very Fine |
