Description: An impressive pair of Western Han dynasty hu's, ca.206-100BC. Both hu's have a thick and uneven green lead glaze. The hu's are heavily potted. The shape/form is very strong and masculine. Dimensions are approximately 7-1/2" tall, 5-1/2" widest. The entire vase seems to have been glazed, excluding the bottom the vases. These hu's appear to have been fired upside down. Three dark spur marks are evident on each mouth rim. Also note the large glaze drips that resemble large bumps or blisters and the slightly undulating surface of the mouth rim. These vases were placed in the kiln on its mouth rim. The bottom of both hu's is unglazed with exception of over-run apparently from when the hu's were turned over after dipping in the glaze and before placing into the kiln. After firing this excess glaze was cut off. Both hu's demonstrate fabulous "baojiang". In other words, the uneven textured surface and varied surface colors, including patina, that are diagnostic for ancient burial ware. The baojiang appears streaky and silvery and undulates like a lunar-scape. The pair is in excellent, museum quality condition, without injury or repair. A truly fabulous pair that is even more beautiful when seen in-hand.
