Description: A rare and fine Blanc de Chine PU-TAI (Laughing Buddha), with provenance (see below), ca. Late 17th/18th c. Dimensions: approx. 4-3/8", approx. 5-5/8" wide. A finely modeled reclining Pu-Tai with an off-white rich glaze. Banc de Chine glaze, (aka Ding ware), was first originated during the Song dynasty (960-1279) at the Dingyao kilns and was renown as one of the 5 famous Song dynasty kilns. As mentioned the glaze is an off-white color. The bottom of the figure is sealed and solid with a hollow core. Both these characteristics are classic diagnostic of earlier period Blanc de Chine (Ding) ware.
Provenance: This Pu-Tai was acquired as an antique in China, during the mid-19th century, by Captain Tomaso Serra, of the Royal Italian Navy. It was later passed down through his children, grand children and to his great grandson George Serra, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada in 2007. And we recently acquired it from George Serra.
