Description: A fine Japanese inro and netsuke, ca.18th c. Edo Period. Dimensions are for the inro: 2-1/2" tall, 2-3/4" wide and 7/8" deep. For the netsuke, 1-1/2" long, 7/8" tall, 3/4" deep. The inro has 3 compartments and has gold and black lacquer in raised 'takemakie' relief. The relief depiction is of a tiger jumping onto a rock out-cropping which is inlaid with mother of pearl, gold and red flakes. The reverse side of the inro is decorated with takemakie details of bamboo and rock out-croppings. The cat netsuke, which was acquired together with the inro, is made of a dark Japanese hardwood. It has 2 large, worn himatoshi bore in a straight manner from the belly to the back of the netsuke. The eyes are inlaid with red amber. There was no ojime when we acquired this inro.The clearly cording is a later addition and is contemporary. Condition consensus is Very Fine condition.
