Description: A fine Ming dynasty, Chenghua mark, Tianqi period, wucai wine cup, ca.1621-27. Beautifully executed Ming expression of Chenghua wucai ware. The only tell tale sign of Tianqi is the style of the Chenghua's qinghua signature on bottom. It is unmistakenly Tianqi style. It was understandable that Tianqi would borrow the styles of his predecessors if remembering this Ming emperor's reign.

MIng Emperor TianQi (1621-27), son of Ming Emperor TaiChang (1619-21), grandson of Ming emperor Wanli (1573-1619). Born in the 33rd year of Wanli's reign, 1605, and died during the 7th year of his own reign, 1627. TianQi became emperor at the age of 16. Eventhough as Emperor of China, TianQi paid little attention to Stately affairs. He allowed his country to fall to despare, poverty and corruption. He paid little to no attention to routine affairs as other fatuous emperors. The countries Stately affairs were actually ran by his eunuch Wei Zhongxian and his nannie Madam Ke. Whereas Tianqi liked to make architectural models. This consequently, would occupy his days in the palace. s the country suffered under his reign, and many peasant uprisings broke out. TianQi's reign was instrumental in rapid decline and fall of the Great Ming Dynasty. TianQi is second to the last of the Great Ming Dynasty emperors.

With that history, Tianqi, (Wei Zhongxian, Madam Ke), had little interest in developing a distinctive style. So they borrowed from the past.

This small wine cup is very peaceful, having an almost zen-like nature scene. The scene has birds amid flora and jagged rocks in underglaze cobalt blue lines and wucai colors. Concentric lines in underglaze cobalt blue circumvent the inner and outer mouth rim as well as above the foot rim.

There is a small expertly executed museum repair done many years ago. The repair is unnoticeble. Additional inquiry can be emailed to: cicadaasianart@hotmail.com.
