Description: A very fine and unusual pear-shaped Korean Ewer with underglaze cobalt-blue design. We attribute this ewer to the15th/17th century. The ewer has an auspicious pear-shape with an elephant spout and a long and delicate looped handle that has a small bird at the top curl. The ewer sits a little askewed on its splayed foot. This is ewer is quite unique not only for its pear shape body that stands on a tall splayed foot. But that the vessel fills from the bottom! The ewer was made with an inverted core-fill. This is much like an inverted cone that was formed above the foot and on the inside of the ewer. There is an opening in the center of the foot that allows liquid to enter. We believe the vessel was filled in an upright position by submersion. The liquid will percolate up into the ewer and stop when it is filled. Another possible way to fill the ewer is to turn it on its side and pour the liquid in. Though this manner of filling only fills no more than about half the ewer and is messy. We believe the submersion method seems much more likely the manner the ewer was filled as this method permitted the most amount of liquid to enter and stay in the ewer. This pear-shape ewer is decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue Phoenix's and clouds circumventing the body. Interestingly the blue glaze turned an olive-green in the high firing process. Underglaze blue was first introduced by the Chinese during the Late Song dynasty to Early Yuan dynasty, A.D.13th/14th century. This was adapted by the Koreans around the 14th century. The earlier cobalt-blue was difficult to control in the high temperatures reached in the oxygen-reducing kilns. The resulting shade of blue varied from black, blue and green. The overall condition consensus is extremely fine condition with only a couple of fine hairline cracks on the delicate handle that do not seem to go through. b7/3
