Description: Origin: Jiangsu-Zhejiang, China,Age: Eastern Jin Jin Dynasty, ca.370-420. Dimensions: 6-1/2" tall, 7-1/4" diameter (widest); A splendid and seldom seen rare Eastern Jin dynasty Iron-Spot covered jar. This rare style is documented in He Li's "Chinese Ceramics: The New Standard Guide," page 81, plates #99-101. The porcelain jar is a low, ovoid. The porcelain is lightly potted and high fired. The glaze is a watery and translucent, pale blue-green underglaze with overglaze brown iron spots. The glaze can be called proto-celadon. This jar is among the earliest examples of celadon glaze in world history. The glaze also has sugar-fine overall crackling. The lid has carved and incised lines/ridges with a small looped strap handle. The body also has two pairs of small looped strap handles on each side of the jar's shoulder. The glaze color above the handles and just below the gently flared lip is a darker shade of translucent green. The glaze stops about a half of the way up the side from the flat unglazed foot. This exposes a light gray porcelain body. The mouth and foot rims are unglazed, while the inside and outside is glazed. The lid is glaze on the outer side and unglazed on the underside. It has a wonderful slight wavy quality when viewed perpendicularly and also exhibits a sugary fine crackle.
