Description: Very Fine Later Tang to Jin dynasty Sancai small plate with carved design, ca. AD 9th-13th century. Dimensions: 2cm (1.9") high and 14cm (5.5") diameter.
This little plate has a beautifully vibrant sancai glazes in shades of green, blue, brown and white. We attribute this plate to be from later Tang to Jin dynasty. The small plate has an almost hidden low-relief carving of flowers in the recessed center of the plate. The glaze is 'glassy' with a multitude of irregular sized bubbles. The irregular bubbles are the result of the hardwood fed, oxygen-reducing kiln firing. This causes internal temperature fluctuations and irregular sized air-bubbles. This cannot be replicated in modern kilns and is an indisputable diagnostic of our attributed age. The underside of the plate is unglazed revealing white qin metamorphasis (another diagnostic of attributed age).
