Description: A rare Han dynasty glazed earthenware brazier with cicadas, ca.100 BC - AD 100. This brazier's origin is probably Eastern Han and was excavated in the Shaanxi province in Northern China. Made to imitate iron or bronze braziers, this one is made of reddish earthenware with applied molded cicadas. The dimensions are 10" long, 6" wide and 5-1/4" tall. The brazier is rectangular with gentle flaring sides and 4 sturdy legs. The sides and legs have carved animal, human and other symbolic reliefs. The top of the brazier has 2 horizontal supports with cleverly applied cicadas for resting cooking untinsels on. The bottom has carved openwork "vents" to allow heat to rise while cooking. The entire brazier has an unevenly applied yellowish-green lead glaze with exception to the bottom of the feet which expose the reddish clay. This piece is an excellent example of Han potters' ingenuity. This rare brazier is in exellent condition without any damage or repair.
