Description: A rare Liao dynasty 3-color earthenware pillow, ca.911-1125. The dimensions are 7-3/8" widest, 3" tall. Shaped as an unfurled lotus petal and made of a beige clay. The top has a carved and incised design of a solitude duck in a lotus pond. The pillow is glazed in a thick and uneven, runny polychrome glazes in the hues of yellow, brown and green. The glaze stops in unevenly with large runs above the flat foot. There pllow has fine spider-web crackling over the entire glazed surface. There are 2 pairs of holes halfway up the side. These were made to facilitate filling with cool water to make the pillow more comfortable during the hot nights. A very clever adaptation showing a high level of craftsmanship. The pillow is in very fine to extremely fine condition without any damage or repair.b5/16
