Description: A beautiful 'mirrored' pair of Japanese 'Peking Glass' Style Bowls, ca. 1910. These bowls were acquired from the estate of the United States first woman doctor. Dimensions are 6-7/8" diameter, 3" tall (without base), 5" tall (with custom hardwood base). The term mirrored means that each bowl's design was carved to be mirrored images of one another similar to looking at you reflection in a mirror. Your right hand will reflect on your mirrors left side with your thumb facing inward (opposite of your actual position). We attribute the country of origin as Japan. This attribution came in part to the style of decoration is very Japanese. The butterflies are very Japanese in their stylized simplicity. The use of Morning Glories is also a seem Japanese theme. It is possible that these bowls were made in China for the Japanese market. But in any event, we feel these bowls are made by or for Japanese consumption.As before mentioned, these fine bowls are mirror images of each other: one facing left and the other facing right. The bowls are formed from opaque white glass which was over-laid with sky blue glass. The sky blue glass was cut and ground back to reveal the design as floating on top of the white base color. The design depicts Japanese styled butterflies fluttering among blooming Morning Glories. The bowls have a relatively tall foot rim, carved from the sky blue over-lay, and has a somewhat shallow recessed inner foot. The bowls come with fine custom hardwood bases, (natural color), most likely rosewood. Condition Consensus: Excellent Condition without any injury or repair.
